Celsius to Fahrenheit

Celsius and Fahrenheit, both ways, with the exact formula.

Celsius180°C
Fahrenheit356°F

Fahrenheit is Celsius × 9/5 + 32. Water freezes at 0°C and 32°F, and boils at 100°C and 212°F. Body temperature 37°C is 98.6°F. A gas-mark chart’s Fahrenheit column is rounded, so gas mark 4 is listed as 350°F while 180°C on this page is 356°F.

The factor is exact. The figure on screen is rounded for reading.

How to use it

  1. Start from Celsius or from Fahrenheit.
  2. Enter the temperature.
  3. Read the other scale. The conversion is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.

The exact scale

Water freezes at 0°C and 32°F. It boils at 100°C and 212°F. Those two points fix the formula: multiply Celsius by 9/5 and add 32. The other way, subtract 32 and multiply by 5/9. The page uses that arithmetic, so 180°C is 356°F and 37°C is 98.6°F.

A weather forecast, a fever and an oven set in degrees are all this same scale. What changes is the rounding people expect. A forecast is a whole degree. A cook can live with a degree either way. A lab cannot.

Ovens and the chart that looks wrong

Gas mark tables print 180°C beside 350°F. That 350 is the rounded recipe convention, and this page will keep showing 356 for 180. Both can be true because they are answering different questions. Use the gas mark converter when the recipe gives a mark, and this page when it gives a temperature.

A fahrenheit oven in an American recipe can be typed in directly. Fan ovens are a separate 20°C adjustment, described on the gas mark page, and they are not part of the °C to °F formula.

Questions

What is 0°C in Fahrenheit?

32°F.

What is 180°C in Fahrenheit?

356°F exactly. Gas-mark charts list gas 4 as 180°C and 350°F because that Fahrenheit column is rounded.
