Compress image

Lower the quality of a JPEG or WebP, or re-save a PNG, and read the real sizes.

Runs in your browser. Your files are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Add one or more JPEG, PNG or WebP pictures.
  2. Set the quality if the file is a JPEG or a WebP. PNG ignores the slider.
  3. Read the before and after size for each file, then download.

What the quality slider changes

JPEG and WebP are encoded again at the quality you set. A lower number usually means a smaller file and a softer picture. PNG is written back losslessly, so the slider does not apply and the file often stays a similar size.

The sizes on the page are the bytes of the file you added and the bytes of the new file. If the new file is larger, the line says there is no saving.

When a different format is the real saving

A photograph stored as PNG is often smaller as a JPEG. Use PNG to JPG or PNG to WebP for that. To change the pixel dimensions, use Resize image.

Questions

Why did my PNG not shrink?

PNG compression here is lossless. It does not throw pixels away. A PNG that was already compressed has little left to remove.

Does a lower quality change the dimensions?

No. Compress keeps the width and height. Resize changes the dimensions.

Is the picture uploaded?

No. Encoding runs in this browser.
