Units
Height converter
Centimetres, or feet and inches, for standing height.
How to use it
- Type feet and inches, or type centimetres. The field you edit is the one that is converted.
- Read the other scale. Inches are shown to one decimal when they do not land on a whole inch.
- Measure without shoes if you are filling in a form.
The inch in a person’s height
An inch is exactly 25.4 mm. Five feet 10 inches is 70 inches, which is 177.8 cm. Six feet is 182.88 cm. The page uses that factor both ways: centimetres divided by 2.54 gives inches, then whole feet are taken out at 12 inches each.
A height that lands between inch marks is left as a decimal inch. Rounding 177.8 cm to 5 ft 11 in would add a size that is not there. Forms that want a whole number of centimetres can take 178 for that same 5 ft 10 in.
Where each unit shows up
UK passports and a lot of UK conversation still use feet and inches. Irish passports and clinic notes use centimetres. Clothes labelled in centimetres of inside leg are a length along the leg, which is a different measurement from standing height. Use the centimetres and inches page for a short length such as a hem.
Stand straight, without shoes, with the tape or the book level. Morning height is a little taller than evening height.
