UK money
VAT calculator
Add VAT to a net price, or pull it back out of a gross price.
How to use it
- Enter a net amount to add VAT, or a gross amount to remove it.
- Pick 20%, 5%, 0%, or type another rate.
- Read the net, the VAT and the gross, each rounded to the nearest penny.
Add or remove
Adding VAT takes the rate as a percentage of the net price. Removing it uses the VAT fraction: at 20% that is one sixth of the VAT-inclusive price, and at 5% it is one twenty-first. VAT Notice 700’s example is a £2.40 VAT-inclusive price at 20%, which contains 40p of VAT.
Zero-rated is not the same thing as exempt. A zero rate still sits inside the VAT system and is 0% here. An exempt supply is outside that arithmetic, so do not use 0% as a stand-in for exemption when the distinction matters.
A quick check, not a VAT return
Amounts are rounded half up to the nearest penny. The standard UK rate is 20%, the reduced rate is 5%, and the zero rate is 0%. A custom rate is there for a quote or a drill, and it is labelled as custom. This does not decide which rate a supply takes, and it is not advice.

Questions
How do I find the VAT inside a price?
Choose “Remove VAT”, enter the price you were charged, and pick the rate. At 20%, the VAT is one sixth of that price.
Is exempt the same as 0%?
No. Zero-rated sales are taxable at 0%. Exempt sales are not taxed as VAT in that way. This calculator only does the arithmetic.
Are the amounts I type uploaded?
No. The sum is worked out in the page.
